Bruce Cohen, owner of Kentuckiana Center for Addiction Medicine in Louisville, Kentucky, shared with us why he chose Capital Funds.
What do you do and why did you start your business?
I have a personal connection to long-term recovery, and my business partners had the experience to help get it off the ground. I love giving back, to keep working to help make things better for people. I love doing what we do, I just do.
What did you use the funds for? How did working with Capital Funds impact your business?
We needed the funds to keep the clinic open during the most challenging months of COVID. It helped us pay for some of the insurance costs so that we could keep going.
Why did you pick Capital Funds?
My broker knew that customer service was really important to me, so he recommended Capital Funds to me. He said that they’re very nice and they have an easy application process.
How did COVID-19 impact your business?
It almost destroyed us, and we’re still coming back from that. We had major cash flow problems and the insurance companies didn’t even want to talk to us. It took 7.5 months before insurance carriers started helping us out. We also had to spend a lot more on telemedicine.
Was Capital Funds responsive when COVID affected your business?
It’s when things aren’t going well for you that you find out if folks are good or bad, and Capital Funds came through for me when we had difficulty making payments.
What was it like working with Capital Funds?
The people at Capital Funds could not do more to be friendly and kind. You people have been wonderful. Everybody we talked to were golden and just helped us by being kind.
What do you love most about working with Capital Funds?
I liked how the application process was really easy. And the people, how they respect and treat their customer. No question about it. And that comes from management, the attitude of who runs Capital Funds, that they prioritize good customer service.
What do you enjoy most about being a small business owner? Biggest challenges?
I like being my own boss. You can make faster changes to your business. You have to know how to do everything, so when you screw up, it’s on you. You can’t quit, you have to make it work. You have to think of outside of the box solutions and try it out. Some ideas will work, some won’t.
Advice to other small businesses?
Have a group of people who have more experience about running a business than you so that you don’t trip over Pike’s Peak – other people will see it before you do. Having mentors helps you to avoid big goof ups.
